What the mind forgets, the heart remembers.
Alone in a train station bathroom, Sophia Hernandez has no memory of who she is or how she got there. All she’s certain of are three things: her college ID is a lie, bad people are coming for her, and no one can be trusted.
The only clue to her past is the fellow student who finds her. Although Sophia’s gut tells her Kyle is lying when he claims he can’t help her, his touch makes her heart race. Is it because of a red-hot natural attraction, or a missing memory of something far more dangerous?
As two mysterious, menacing men chase them from the station, Sophia’s memories return in frustrating fragments. So do deadly skills she didn’t know she had. In the next forty-eight hours, a loved one’s life will be on the line as she sifts through a mounting tangle of secrets and lies.
Including the most heart-wrenching secret of all. Not only isn’t she a normal college student, she isn’t even a normal human.
Warning: Contains one girl who is more than she seems, one boy who knows more than he’s telling, and enough twists to give you whiplash. Expect explosions of all kinds.
This book was just pure awesomeness. Seriously, it's been a very long time since I've read something so fresh and appealing. I don't even want to touch on the specifics of what this book is about because anything I say would be one huge spoiler. So you'll have to take the synopsis at face value here.
The writing style reminded me of the way the TV drama Alias was always shot. You start off with something crazy, like a girl who has no idea who she is, and then each chapter reveals a little more by jumping from flashbacks of memory to what is happening right then and there. This is not an easy way to write a novel, and if you aren't careful with the way you jump back and forth it might get confusing for your readers, but the author navigated this flawlessly with perfectly timed reveals so that we have an idea of what's going on, but we really don't know for certain until the very end.
The tension and action build as the well plotted tale unfolds, and each character, including Sophia, is so fantastically developed you can't help but bond with every single one of them. Okay so...gah...I want to get into the depth of Sophie's character but I can't do that without giving away spoilers. Suffice it to say that the inner conflicts that she deals with in order to do what is right and also follow the laws that have always been set for her are illustrated perfectly through her internal narrative and interactions with those she works and goes to school with.
In the end, I think any reader will find this story so perfectly balanced with thrills, chills, romance and action they won't be interested in reading anything else until they finish the series...such a bummer that the series isn't finished yet.
I highly recommend this book to all lovers of action, romance, and thrillers. Tracey Martin is sure to become your new favorite author.
I gave it five cherry blossoms!
Tracey Martin grew up outside of Philadelphia, the lucky recipient of a drama-free childhood, which is why she spent so much time reading about other people’s lives. It was while she was working on her doctorate in psychology that she had an epiphany–imaginary people are way more fun than real ones. And so she began writing. Never able to choose just one of anything, she currently writes both urban fantasy for adults and contemporary stories for teens.
She likes her coffee simple, her music epic, and her movies to contain explosions. A city girl at heart, she doesn’t understand how she and her husband ended up living in New Hampshire, but writing keeps her off the mean, small town streets. You can find her online at tracey-martin.com.
